BEL AIR, MD — Although temporary fencing is up at a playground in Bel Air, officials are cautioning adults to keep an eye on their little ones, who may be enticed by new equipment.

The Harford County Department of Recreation and Parks began renovations at Lyn Stacy Getz Playground, located off Ring Factory Road near MD 24, around March 7.

"Part of the playground is open, and the other part is fenced off for the project," county officials said. "Please be careful and stay out of the fenced area and away from the construction equipment. Enjoy watching the progress from a safe distance."

A sensory puzzle maze, rock wall, net bridge, rainbow steps, racing slides, tunnel, suspension bridge and clubhouse are being installed where a pressure-treated wooden playground used to be for children ages 2 to 5. Different types of swings will also be added to the mix.

Harford County officials shared photos of the progress on the playground since they began earlier this month.

While it may appear the new equipment is in place at the playground, county officials advise the base is not in yet. That means children cannot use the items.

The renovations are expected to take six weeks, which puts reopening around April 14.

When the playground is ready, authorities say the temporary fencing will come down.

"Please continue to watch your children and keep them safe near the construction area," county officials said in a statement Tuesday, March 22. "Thank you for your patience so far!"

The playground was designed to honor Lyn Stacy Getz, a Bel Air native who died in 1999 at age 32.

Officials said the project now underway is the first significant renovation to the playground since it was built in 2001. Members of the Getz family, who helped fund the original playground, were consulted in the renovation process, according to county officials.

As spring arrives, Lyn Stacy Getz Playground is not the only Harford County play area getting an update.

A section of Annie's Playground closed March 14 for renovations and will remain off limits until late May. Officials said they aimed to complete the updates there — which also call for replacing the old wooden play structures with things like a playhouse and rock wall — before the summer.

At both playgrounds, officials said memorials were temporarily moved during construction; they will be returned when the projects are complete.
